Blood Spot Card

Information on the newborn blood spot screening card.

Interactive blood spot card

Ever wondered what information is needed to complete the boxes on the newborn blood spot card?

The UKNSPC has developed an interactive e-learning resource to help sample takers fill in the details on the card before taking the baby's blood spot sample. See if you can answer correctly a minimum of 15 of the 20 questions to be able to print off a certificate of successful completion.

Newborn blood spot card review 2011 - consultation

As the newborn blood spot card has been in use for nearly two years, the UKNSPC is reviewing the content and layout. Please check the Newborn blood spot card review 2011 - consultation page for updates.

Background

The UK Newborn Screening Programme Centre (UKNSPC) working with the UK Newborn Screening Laboratory Network (UKNSLN) have formed a multidisciplinary working group to review and propose amendments to the design and supply of the blood spot card.

New card

The new blood spot card was manufactured in September 2009. The card is produced as a multi-part card and a single part card. The single part card is used by the Leeds laboratory and the multi-part card is used by the rest of England. Please continue to use the old cards (checking they have not expired) until stocks are depleted and the new card is filtered in.

Ordering cards

The Newborn Blood Spot Screening cards are supplied through the National NHS Forms Contract which is managed by 3M SPSL.

Your organisation should already have an account with 3M to purchase other NHS products such as prescription forms.  The Newborn Blood Spot Screening cards should be purchased in the same way as these other national products.

You need to investigate your internal supply chain and ensure that you have the ability to obtain a continuous supply of cards.  This is likely to be via your Stores or Purchasing department.  If you cannot find out who is the lead person/s within your organisation you can email nhsforms@spsl.uk.com who will be able to give you the relevant contact name.

Independent midwives can order a minimum of 50 cards using the form below.

If you have any concerns about supply or the contract as a whole please address these to the NHS Secure Forms Contract Manager, Les Davison via email on Les.Davison@ppa.nhs.uk.
