Interactive blood spot card
Ever wondered what information is needed to complete the boxes on the newborn blood spot card?
Follow the link to our interactive e-learning resource. Hover over and click on some of the boxes on the card to reveal a question with either one or more correct answers. See if you can answer correctly a minimum of 15 of the 20 questions to be able to print off a certificate of successful completion (remember to tick all the answers that apply to each question). The interactive card will reset if you navigate away from the page and if you answer all the questions.
(Don't forget that when you are actually taking a baby's blood spot sample, you must complete the details on the card during the visit and before bleeding the baby.)
The interactive card was published in September 2012.
Blood spot sampling film
The UKNSPC has made a film to support midwives and other sample takers in obtaining good quality newborn blood spot samples. 'Taking a newborn blood spot sample' is available in two versions - a full version (11 minutes) and a shorter version that highlights key messages (5 minutes). The full and short versions of the film are also available in high resolution on YouTube.
The film was made in March 2012 to support the revised Guidelines for Newborn Blood Spot Sampling (February 2012).
The training presentations below are updated versions of the resources originally produced by the Programme Centre’s Parent Support Research Team at the Institute of Education, University of London. They are intended to support trainers in delivering training about newborn blood spot screening. They cover information about the conditions screened for as part of national programmes in the UK and outline the quality assurance standards developed by the UKNSPC, with a specific focus on communication with parents and on the process of taking the blood spot sample.
