The UKNSPC and the NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Programme identified the need for a laboratory quality framework for dried blood spot screening to coordinate and develop existing programmes (PKU, CHT and SCD) and to develop quality assurance (biochemical and molecular) for new programmes CF and MCADD. Under the leadership of Professor Anne Green a multi-professional group comprising newborn screening laboratory directors, organisers of UK EQA schemes and representatives of the UKNSPC & SC&T programmes reviewed the current position with regard to laboratory quality for the UK Newborn Screening Programmes. This working group reported and identified the need for a new group to consolidate the existing work, and address recommendations for further development .
